Resource Base teacher

Welcome back to Resource Base for Autumn Term 2019

I hope that you have all enjoyed the Summer and that you are looking forward to a new year of learning and fun. I certainly am! In this letter there will be an overview of what a typical day is like in Resource base and the subjects we will be learning about.

From 9am until 10.15am children will have Maths. After that, they will have snack and outdoor break until 10.35am. Then there will be a range of phonics, spellings, reading, writing, talking and role playing activities as part of their Literacy curriculum. In the afternoons we have curriculum weeks where we focus on different subjects in more detail. Our first will be History for two weeks.

Here is an overview of what Resource Base children will be learning this term in their afternoon sessions:-

History

We will start our History learning with the question “What did the Romans ever do for us?” Within this learning we will explore how life changed for British people when the Romans invaded and how the Roman occupation of Britain helped to advance British society. We will learn about the life of a Roman soldier and how the army worked. We will also learn about the life of a typical Roman – such as what they ate, what they wore and what their houses were like. We will learn about famous people from the time such as Roman emperors and Queen Boudicca.

Geography

Our Geography learning will start with the question “What would an alien find exciting about our town?” and within this topic we will be exploring our local area. As well as this, the children will also need to know the names of the four countries that make up the UK and name the three main seas that surround the UK. They will also be memorising their address, including postcode. Know the names of and locate the seven continents of the world. They also will be learning the names of and locate the five oceans of the world, the name of and locate the four capital cities of the UK.

Science

In Science we will be learning what do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed? We will compare and group rocks based on their appearance and physical properties, giving reasons. Children will learn how soil is made and how fossils are formed.

Computing

In computing lessons the children will be developing their knowledge of the keyboard and how to type effectively. Children will complete a research file about the Romans.

DT

Children will be creating a Roman banquet. They will be learning about how to be both hygienic and safe when using food. They will bring a creative element to the food product that they design.

Art

Know how to sculpt clay and other mouldable materials to make Roman style pottery. Children will also closely study and create their own Roman style mosaics. They will be able to explain some of the features of art from the Roman period.

RE

Our RE learning will be based on two units which start with the following questions:-

Why did God give Jesus to the world?

Is it possible to be kind to everyone all the time?

PSCHE

The core theme for our PSCHE lessons this term is relationships. Throughout the term, we will be looking at healthy relationships, feelings and emotions and valuing difference.

Uniform / PE Kit

Please ensure that your child's uniform is clearly labelled with their name. PE kits should also be labelled and they can remain in school for the full half term.

Dinner and Snack Monies

If you pay for your child's school dinners, please put the money in an envelope labelled with their name and the amount. Children should bring snack money into school in a small purse or wallet or an envelope or money bag with their name on.

Homework

The children will have Homework Quest to complete which should be handed in at the end of the Autumn Term. Children will complete a research file about the Romans. More information about this will be given next week. Please try to read each night with your child as part of their homework.

Please remind your children that their books bags, reading books, PE kit, snack money, uniform and letters are their responsibility and they need to look after them.

If you have any questions regarding your child's learning please do not hesitate to talk to me! I am available at the end of the school day to answer any questions and I am happy to talk on the phone if needed.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Waring
