Class 7 Spring Term 2019
Resource Base Spring Term
Welcome back to school for the Spring Term! I would like to take this chance to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year! I hope you and your children all had a brilliant Christmas holidays together and enjoyed your family time.
Our topic for this term will be “Exploring Polar Lands” and we will learn about this through Art, Design Technology, Music and Geography. We will start this new topic with the question “What is life like for the people and animals that live in the North and South Poles?” By the end of this Term, our children should be able to explain in detail what these cold places are like.
In English we will be carrying on with our Power Steps Literacy groups and I will be working in our topic wherever I can! We will be reading brilliant books about the Polar regions and the animals that live there. These will be 'The Lonely Polar Bear”, “The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud”, “Ice Bear” and “The Emperor's Egg" among others. We will be writing descriptions, stories, poems, fact-files, information texts about and instructional texts. Our children will also continue have daily Phonics sessions within their Power Steps groups.
In our Maths lessons we will be focussing on number games exploring place value, addition, subtraction and some multiplication as well as extending to work on position, direction, measures and shapes.
In Geography, we will be looking at the landscpae features of the North and South Poles as well as the climate and weather. We will also be studying how the Inuit people survive in these cold lands and we will do a mini-topic on igloos. We will compare and contrast the Polar Lands with where we live to develop reasoning skills.
For History, we will learn about the people who explored the North and South Poles from ther past.
In Science we will be investigating how materials change - especially linked to melting and freezing. We will do an investigation to see how we can free a boat stuck in ice. We will look at how animals have adapted to live in Polar climates and especially how they use camouflage. We will also be studying food chains using the words predator and prey. As an ongoing topic, we will be tracking and observing seasonal changes in the environment through the Winter and into Spring time.
This term the children will continue to develop their personal, social and health skills. We will start with how we value differences by comparing our own lives to those of the Inuit people. Then we will move on to our feelings and Emotions – especially recognising feelings in ourselves and in others.
In RE will be learning about the stories that Jesus told and the messages that they hold and how wecan learn from.
As always, if you have any concerns or issues that you wish to discuss regarding your child, please contact the school and I will be happy to call you back.
