Year 1 2018 - 2019
Year 1 teacher
A very warm welcome to year 1!
Year 1 is taught by Mrs Kohler and supported by Miss Lewis.
Topic: During our topic lessons, we will be investigating the differences between Runcorn and the rainforest. We will be keeping a weather diary and comparing the weather in Runcorn and the rainforest. We will also learn about our local area and the UK. Children will be learning about the 4 countries that make up the UK. We will also look at the features of the Amazon rainforest and how they differ to the features of the UK.
English: In English we will be working in our Power Steps groups to practice reading and spelling using our phonics. We will learn new sound and review sounds we already know by applying them in our reading. We will practice our sounds by reading words and storybooks at our reading level. Children will also be reading with an adult 1:1 every day. Please ensure your child is reading at home every day. Reading books will be changed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Maths: In maths we will be representing numbers from 0-20. We will be adding and subtracting within 20 in lots of different ways, such as number lines, ten frames, cubes, bead strings and maths pictures. Children will also be working on counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
Science: In science we will be looking at different types of plants. We will investigate what a plant needs to grow and grow our own plants. Children will also learn the main parts of a plant including the flower, stem, leaves and roots. We will learn the names of common UK plants and trees. We will also be looking at the four seasons observing seasonal changes from winter to spring.
Music: Our music lessons this half term will be built around the song ‘Big Bear Funk’ as well as other action songs. As well as singing the song we will also add instruments to it and create our own riffs. There will be lots of games and practical activities which will help to embed the interrelated dimensions of music.
P.E.: Our P.E. days will be Monday and Wednesdays. We will be creating and playing team games. Children should keep their P.E. kit in school on their peg. It would also be very helpful if you could ensure all P.E. kit and uniform is labelled to avoid any missing items of clothing. Please ensure children have suitable footwear for P.E.
R.E.: In R.E. we will be focusing on Christianity. We will investigate the questions ‘Was is always easy for Jesus to show friendship?’ and ‘Why was Jesus welcomed like a king or celebrity by the crowds on Palm Sunday?’
PSHCE: In PSHCE we will be learning about different emotions and relationships. We will also be learning about our school’s core values of ambition, creativity, ownership, resilience and nurture and our British values of respect, tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law.
Art/D&T: In design and technology we will be creating our own fruit salad. During our art lessons we will be studying Rangoli patterns. Children will be designing their own Rangoli patterns and creating a repeated pattern using printing.
Computing: In Computing we will learn what a computer is and how to use one safely.
Please ensure your child brings their book bag and reading journal into school every day. P.E kits need to be in school each Monday. P.E will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. . All P.E. kit and uniform should be labelled to avoid any missing items of clothing.
Snack money is £1.75 a week. You may also pay for multiple weeks if this is easier for you. We will let you know when your child’s snack money has run out.
Spelling homework will be sent home on Mondays. Our spelling test will be on the Friday.
HOMEWORK QUEST You challenge is to make a model of a rainforest! Why not research some of the animals that live there and add them to your model? Projects are due in by Monday the 25th March.
I am available at the beginning and end of the school day to answer any questions. If you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss any concerns you have with regards to your child's learning, please let me know. I look forward to working in partnership with families to ensure the children have a happy and successful year. Thank you for your ongoing support.
