Year 1 2018 - 2019
Year 1 teacher
A very warm welcome to year 1!
Year 1 is taught by Mrs Kohler and supported by Miss Lewis.
Topic: During our topic lessons, we will be learning about toys through time. We will be looking at toys from the present day and toys from a long time ago. We will look at how toys have changed and looking at the reasons behind these changes. We will use timelines to order toys throughout history. We will handle toys from different times and decide which toys we prefer.
English: In English we will be working in our Power Steps groups to practice reading and spelling using our phonics. We will learn new sound and review sounds we already know by applying them in our reading. We will practice our sounds by reading words and storybooks at our reading level. Please ensure your child is reading at home every day. Reading books will be changed every Tuesday and Thursday. Children will sit the phonics screening test after the half term.
Maths: In maths we will be representing numbers from 0-100. We will be adding and subtracting within 20 in lots of different ways, such as number lines, ten frames, cubes, bead strings and maths pictures. Children will also continue counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Children will also begin to measure length, volume and weight and time.
Science: In science we will be learning about everyday materials such as glass, brick, plastic, paper and metal. We will investigate which materials are magnetic and which are not magnetic. We will also learn that some materials are waterproof. We will use what we learn to design an umbrella. We will sort materials based on their properties and use their properties to suggest what the materials may be used for.
P.E.: Our P.E. days will be Thursday and Friday. On Thursday we will take part in dance with a specialist dance coach. On Friday’s we will be creating and playing team games. Children should keep their P.E. kit in school on their peg. It would also be very helpful if you could ensure all P.E. kit and uniform is labelled to avoid any missing items of clothing. Now that we are in summer term some team games may be played outside. As a result please ensure children have suitable footwear for P.E.
R.E.: In R.E. we will be focusing on Judaism. We will investigate the questions ‘Is Shabbat important to Jewish Children?’ and ‘Are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur important to Jewish children?’
PSHCE: In PSHCE we will be exploring the topic ‘Living in the Wider World’. We will also be learning about our school’s core values of ambition, creativity, ownership, resilience and nurture and our British values of respect, tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law.
Art/D&T: In design and technology we will be using our knowledge of everyday materials to design a house for the 4th little pig. During our art lessons we will be looking at the art of David Hockney and using different objects to created repeated printing patterns.
Computing: In Computing we will create our own animations and use the computer to draw images.
Please ensure your child brings their book bag and reading journal into school every day. P.E will take place on Thursday and Friday afternoons. . All P.E. kit and uniform should be labelled to avoid any missing items of clothing.
Snack money is £1.75 a week. You may also pay for multiple weeks if this is easier for you. We will let you know when your child’s snack money has run out.
Spelling homework will be sent home on Mondays. Our spelling test will be on the Friday.
HOMEWORK QUEST Your challenge is to make a timeline of your life! You can look at photos and think of events from your own memory. You could add events from your own life (e.g. learning to walk) and other events you can remember (e.g. the opening of the new Runcorn Bridge). You can use photographs or draw pictures. Projects are due in by Monday 1st July.
I am available at the beginning and end of the school day to answer any questions. If you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss any concerns you have with regards to your child's learning, please let me know. I look forward to working in partnership with families to ensure the children have a happy and successful year. Thank you for your ongoing support.
