Welcome to Year 3!

A very happy new year to you all! I hope that you have all enjoyed the Easter holidays and are looking forward to a brand new term of learning. I know that I am!

Curriculum Overview

Power English and Maths

During our first half-term this Summer, we will be studying a range of texts in our Power English lessons in order to produce a range of written outcomes. In Power 6, we have recently finished our fiction text: The Legend Of Podkin One-Ear and we have not long looked at the non-fiction text entitled: The Buildings that Made London.  The children seemed to enjoy both of these texts very much and it was an absolute pleasure to share their reading experiences with them! In our final cycle, we will continue to look at a range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

In Power 5 maths, we have recently completed topics on fractions,  decimals and money and we are now developing our mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills in perimeter and area.

Science and Topic

In our afternoons together this half-term, Year 3 and I will be exploring a unit of work based on plants. We will also be venturing to the World Museum in Liverpool in order to further develop and consolidate our learning in our previous science topic (rocks and soils). Next half-term however, we will be studying Animals including Humans.

In our topic lessons for the whole of the summer term, we are trying to determine why Greece is has always been in the news, so a lot of our learning will be very much focussed around the Ancient Greeks.

Computing

In our computing lessons with Miss Shaw, the children will be developing their knowledge of the keyboard and how to type effectively. 

RE

In our RE lessons this term we will be looking at two units. During the first unit, we will be looking at Hinduism and more specifically, the belief that Brahman is everywhere and in everything.  In our second unit next half-term, we will be looking at Sikhism.

PSCHE

The core theme for our PSCHE lessons this term is relationships. Throughout the term, we will be looking at healthy relationships, feelings and emotions and valuing difference.

Key information

Uniform / PE Kit

Please can you ensure that your child's unifrom is clearly labelled with their name. PE kits could also be labelled and need to be in school each Monday as we have an hour of PE each Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Please can you ensure the children have indoor and outdoor kits. PE kits can remain in school for the full half term. 

Dinner and Snack Monies

If you pay for your child's school dinners, please remember to put their dinner money in an envelope that has been clearly labelled with their name and the amount inside. Additionally, the children should be bringing snack money into school in a small purse or wallet or if they'd prefer, an envelope with their name on. The children are responsible for managing their own snack money. 

Homework

Homework for Power English and Maths groups will be given on a Wednesday and is to be completed and handed in by the following Monday. The children will also have a final homework quest to complete, but this will be ongoing and isn't expected to be handed in until towards the end of the Summer term. Further information regarding this will be given to the children in due course.

 

I appreciate that this year will be a huge change and a significant challenge for the children as they leave Key Stage 1 in order to continue their learning journies in Key Stage 2, but I am confident that they will adapt and grow, especially in terms of independence. The children have already started to take responsibility for their own learning and that of their classmates and this is is something that we will continue to work on throughout the year. Please remind your children that their books bags, reading books, PE kit, snack money, uniform and letters are their responsibility and therefore they need to look after them.
