Year 5 2018 - 2019
Year 5 teacher
Welcome to the Year 5 class page!
I hope you have all had a brilliant summer holidays, and you are ready for an action packed first term back!
Our topic for this half term is 'Gunpowder, treason and plot'. We will be accessing a range of quality texts in line with our topic, such as Mr Fawkes, The King and The Gunpowder Plot, and Gunpowder Guy. We will be using these texts to complete a character description, a newspaper report and also looking at poetry about Bonfire night. The children have really enjoyed the book so far and I cannot wait for all the amazing work that they are going to produce over the coming weeks!
In maths, our first strand of learning will be place value. This will include reading, writing, ordering and recognising numbers to at least 100000, recognising roman numerals, interpreting negative numbers, rounding numbers, and solving number problems in a context. By the end of term we will have moved on to furthering our skills in addition and subtraction.
Our curriculum newsletter is attached to this page so you can read about our plans for the half term.
I hope the children are all eager to come back to school and are ready for a new, exciting year of learning.
Should you have any concerns or queries, please remember that I am usually available to talk each afternoon at home time.
Mr E Hughes
All reading books and journals need to be in school every day. Please try to read at least three times a week with your child. Regular reading practice at home can help to improve your child's reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing so it is very important.
From the start of this term, we have introduced a class reading diary checklist. The children who read at least three times each week will be in contention to receive a class reward at the end of the term.
Homework will be set every Wednesday with the expectation that it will be back in school by Monday morning. Alongside our homework each week, I will be setting a stand alone homework quest that should be completed over the course of a few weeks - details to follow.
PE kits will need to be in school each Monday and they can be taken home each Friday. PE will take place on Thursday afternoons. However, there may be occasions when PE kits are required for other activities/unscheduled events and so it is important that your child's kit is in school every day.
