Year 5 2017 - 2018
SENCO, Year 5 teacher
Welcome to our Year 5 page!
We have now entered our final half term of Year 5 and what a busy half term we have ahead.
We have started to read a new quality text in our English lessons, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' and the children are hooked already. The text is based on the life of a young boy called Bruno during World War II. Unbeknown to Bruno, he has strong links with Hitler and the Nazi Party, and the story follows his journey as he moves house to live close to his Father's new job. Having previously read Rose Blanche and completed much research about WWII, the children have already made some inferences about the text and what will happen to Bruno. I wonder if the children will be right?
In maths we have started to look at units of measure and have converted between different units of measure. We will move on to learning about what volume is and how to calculate the volume of different 3d solids.
Our curriculum newsletter is attached to this page so you can read about our plans for the half term.
Should you have any concerns or queries, please remember that I am usually available to talk each afternoon at hometime.
All reading books and journals need to be in school everyday. Please try to read at least three times a week with your child. Regular reading practise at home can help to improve your child's reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing so it is very improtant.
Homework will be given out every Wednesday and will need to be returned to school the following Monday.
Spellings will be given out on a Friday and there will be a spelling test the following Friday. Your child will be given spellings approriate to the spelling group that they are working in.
Children complete two tests each Friday - a test of the spellings they have practised and a test of the new spellings that they will be given to practise that week (a pre-test). This is so that we can celebrate the progress of each child from one week to the next. So far this term, every child has improved on their score from their pre-test to their post-test - this is a fantastic achievement!
PE kits will need to be in school each Monday and they can be taken home each Friday. PE will take place on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons, though there may be occasions when PE kits are required for other activities/unscheduled events and so it is important that your child's kit is in school every day.
