Year 5 2018 - 2019

Mr Hughes

Year 5 teacher

Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page!

I hope you have all had a brilliant Easter holiday, and you are ready for an action-packed Summer Term!

Our topic for Summer Term is 'Brazil', which will be linked in with all of our subjects to create a broad, balanced curriculum. The children will be asked to research, discuss, debate and write about Brazil, ensuring that they cover a wide range of the Year 5 Curriculum skills. The children will be designing and creating scupltures of famous Brazilian people in art, which will be displayed in the classroom.

We entered out third 'Power Cycle' before Easter, which will continue in to the Summer Term for another three weeks. After this, the children will be reassessed and assigned to their relevant Power groups.  If you have any queries about this, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

Our curriculum newsletter is attached to this page so you can read about our plans for Summer Term.

I hope the children are all eager to come back to school and are ready for a fabulous, exciting term of learning.

Should you have any concerns or queries, please remember that I am usually available to talk each afternoon at home time.

Key information

Reading

All reading books and journals need to be in school every day. Please try to read at least three times a week with your child. Regular reading practice at home can help to improve your child's reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing so it is very important.

From the start of this year, we have introduced a class reading diary checklist. The children who read at least three times each week will be in contention to receive a class reward at the end of the term.

Homework

Homework will be set every Wednesday by your child's 'Power Teacher' with the expectation that it will be back in school by Monday. Alongside our homework each week, I will be setting a stand-alone homework quest that should be completed over the course of a few weeks - details to follow.

PE

PE kits will need to be in school each Monday and they can be taken home each Friday. PE will take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday, with Miss Marland from Premier Sports. However, there may be occasions when PE kits are required for other activities/unscheduled events and so it is important that your child's kit is in school every day.
