Year 5 2017 - 2018

Mrs Everett

Vice Principal. Year 5 teacher.

Welcome to our Year 5 page!

We have no entered our final term of Year 5 and what a busy term we have ahead!

We have already started a new quality text in our English work, 'Rose Blanche' and the children spent the first week working on their reading skills - making inferences about the text and predicting the content prior to reading it.  The text is based on the life of a child living in Germany during World War II and the book captured the children's attention instantly.  They have already written some wonderful pieces of writitng and I now there are many more to come as the term progresses.

In maths we have been developing our knowledge of decimals, building on the work we completed last half term.  The children are becoming more fluent in calculating with decimals and are now able to explain their understanding using the correct terminology.

Our curriculum newsletter is attached to this page so you can read about our plans for the half term.

Should you have any concerns or queries, please remember that I am usually available to talk each afternoon at hometime.

Key information

All reading books and journals need to be in school everyday. Please try to read at least three times a week with your child. Regular reading practise at home can help to improve your child's reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing so it is very improtant.

Homework will be given out every Wednesday and will need to be returned to school the following Monday.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and there will be a spelling test the following Friday.  Your child will be given spellings approriate to the spelling group that they are working in.

Children complete two tests each Friday - a test of the spellings they have practised and a test of the new spellings that they will be given to practise that week (a pre-test).  This is so that we can celebrate the progress of each child from one week to the next.  So far this term, every child has improved on their score from their pre-test to their post-test - this is a fantastic achievement!

PE kits will need to be in school each Monday and they can be taken home each Friday. PE will take place on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons, though there may be occasions when PE kits are required for other activities/unscheduled events and so it is important that your child's kit is in school every day.
