Year 6 2019 - 2020

Mr Hughes

Year 6 teacher

Welcome to the Year 6 Class Page!

I hope you have all had a brilliant summer holiday, and you are ready for an action-packed Autumn Term!

The children were assessed at the end of the Summer Term and in the first two weeks back after the summer holidays. They have been streamed into the relevant Power Maths and Lietracy groups, for their stage of development. This will continue for eight weeks, at which point they will be re-assesed and re-groupings may take place.

Our topics for Autumn Term are 'The VIkings' and 'South America', which will be linked in with all of our subjects to create a broad, balanced curriculum. The children will be asked to research, discuss, debate and write about their topics, ensuring that they cover a wide range of the Year 6 Curriculum skills. The children will be designing and creating Norse Art shields in Art, which will be displayed in the classroom.

Our curriculum newsletter is attached to this page so you can read about our plans for Autumn Term.

I hope the children are all eager to come back to school and are ready for a fabulous, exciting term of learning.

Should you have any concerns or queries, please remember that I am usually available to talk each afternoon at home time.

Key information

Reading

All reading books and journals need to be in school every day. Please try to read at least three times a week with your child. Regular reading practice at home can help to improve your child's reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing so it is very important.

Homework

Homework will be set every Wednesday by your child's 'Power Teacher' with the expectation that it will be back in school by Monday. Alongside our homework each week, I will be setting a stand-alone homework quest that should be completed over the course of a few weeks - details to follow.

PE

Due to us swimming for the half term at Brookvale Recreation Centre, Swimming kits will need to be in school every Wednesday. However, there may be occasions when PE kits are required for other activities/unscheduled events and so it is important that your child's kit is in school every day.
