At Palace Fields we aim to teach children to:
- Read with fluency, accuracy and understanding.
- Develop an understanding and appreciation of literary, non-fiction and non-literary texts.
All of our children are encouraged to reach 'Legendary' status in our reading league.
Children read to an adult several times a week in school according to their needs and we ask that parents and carers support their child at home by listening to them read at least three times a week.
Palace Fields has a variety of reading schemes, including Oxford Reading Tree and Read Write Inc, to support children to develop their reading skills. Children are given books appropriate to their reading ability.
Once children have progressed on to 'free readers' there is a large selection of books in each classroom for children to choose from and they are encouraged to read a variety of text types and books by different authors.
Phonics is currently being taught as part of our Power English, which ensures all children, regardless of their age are getting phonics input appropriate to their ability. We currently use a lot of Read Write Inc resources and tools to support this.
Children in Year 1 are required to take a statutory check to assess their understanding of phonics. These results are shared with parents on the end of year reports.
